The Tanzanian health authorities have stated their commitment to strengthening the surveillance of epidemics using an electronic system. Minister of Health Ummy Mwalimu announced on Monday that the ministry has introduced the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system, an efficient electronic platform for monitoring and responding to unconfirmed reports of epidemic outbreaks.

While presenting her ministry’s budget estimates for the 2024/2025 fiscal year in parliament in the capital city of Dodoma, Mwalimu revealed that over 2,300 health workers have been trained on the IDSR system.

As of March 2024, a total of 11,368 unconfirmed cases of potential epidemic outbreaks have been reported through the electronic surveillance and response system. Mwalimu informed the parliament that following investigations into these reported cases, epidemics such as cholera, anthrax, and measles were confirmed.

The minister emphasized the importance of the electronic surveillance system, stating, “After investigations on these reported cases, epidemics such as cholera, anthrax, and measles were confirmed.”

The implementation of the IDSR system is a crucial step towards enhancing Tanzania’s capacity to detect and respond promptly to potential epidemic threats. By leveraging technology and training healthcare professionals, the country aims to improve its preparedness and mitigate the impact of disease outbreaks on public health.

The Tanzanian government recognizes the significance of robust surveillance mechanisms in ensuring timely interventions and minimizing the spread of epidemics. The electronic system will play a vital role in collecting and analyzing data, enabling health authorities to make informed decisions and allocate resources effectively.

As part of its commitment to strengthening the healthcare system, the Tanzanian government continues to prioritize the adoption of innovative technologies and capacity-building initiatives to safeguard the well-being of its citizens.
