Blastomyces is caused by fungus Blastomycosis, living in an environment, especially in moist soil and decaying materials like wood or leaves. It is most common in the Midwest and South, particularly near the Ohio, Mississippi, and Great Lakes rivers.
The CDC says that in states where blastomycosis can be reported, there are only one or two cases per 100,000 people each year. Between 1990 and 2010, the illness was linked to 1,216 deaths, according to one study.
Blastomycosis cannot be passed from one person to another. It is treated with antifungal medication that must be taken for six months to a year, depending on how bad the illness is and how well the person is overall.
According to the health department, the person has symptoms of blastomycosis and a positive antigen or antibody test in 74 of the cases associated with Escanaba Billerud Paper Mill. Nineteen of these cases have been confirmed by culture or microscope, and the remaining 74 are probable.
