Prioritizing Sustainability
The PCL-Marco Group Joint Venture team’s innovative approach to sustainability in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry has resulted in the development of an impressive and groundbreaking new hospital in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. This integration led to achieving the following goals:
- Geothermal Heating System: The hospital’s largest underground geothermal field for a Canadian healthcare facility will provide 100% ground-source geothermal heating and cooling. This solution significantly reduces energy consumption, operating costs, and carbon emissions over the hospital’s lifespan.
- Energy Efficiency: The project team conducted in-depth analyses and cost evaluations to ensure that the hospital’s geothermal system was the most energy-efficient and cost-effective choice. The geo-exchange system was found to have substantial energy savings and lower operational costs compared to traditional fossil fuel-based heating systems.
- Visual and Acoustic Impact Reduction: By eliminating the need for roof-mounted cooling towers, the hospital’s geothermal system reduces visual and acoustic impacts, creating a more aesthetically pleasing and quieter environment for occupants and the surrounding community.
- Water Conservation: The absence of cooling towers in the geothermal system allows the hospital to save up to two million gallons of water annually, contributing to conservation efforts.
- Long-Term Benefits: The hospital’s sustainable design and energy-efficient features will positively affect operating costs, maintenance efficiency, and overall building performance throughout its 30-year lifespan.
By prioritizing sustainability, the PCL-Marco Group Joint Venture team has created a state-of-the-art healthcare facility that enhances healthcare services and serves as a model for future sustainable construction projects.
Building Climate Resilience
The global increase in temperatures, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events necessitate a shift towards building climate resilience in the construction industry. PCL Construction exemplifies this commitment to resilience through projects like the new St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia. With a completion date set for 2027, this state-of-the-art hospital is intentionally designed to withstand climate-related risks and continue providing essential services during natural disasters.
From the outset, PCL engaged climate resilience consultants and participated in workshops with stakeholders and City officials to address resilience challenges. The design-build delivery model allowed PCL to effectively adapt the design to meet specific resilience requirements. The project incorporates various resilience measures, including earthquake-resistant structures, flood barriers, and critical services’ fuel storage to ensure continuous operation during disruptions.
While focusing on resilience, PCL prioritizes human-centric design to create a hospital environment supporting patient and staff well-being. Integrating amenities like restful staff lounges, rooftop gardens, and public spaces demonstrates the balance between form and function in building resilience.
As extreme weather events become more common, incorporating climate resilience into building projects is becoming a prevailing trend. PCL anticipates that more clients will prioritize resilience in future projects, and the experience gained from the St. Paul’s Hospital project will inform their approach to early planning and liaising with authorities to incorporate resilience into designs effectively.
By building resilient structures that can withstand climate challenges, the construction industry plays a crucial role in safeguarding communities, ensuring continuous essential services, and preparing for a more sustainable and secure future.
